His family has fallen on hard times and our protagonist, Dub is determined to help them. He packs up what he needs and loads it on the always accommodating Valentine. Dub sets out on a quest to find the gold mine of a long-dead Anasazi Indian. On the way, he takes work on various ranches and has the money sent home. His ranch hand work brings a number of new friendships as well as many close calls in dangerous situations. The communication Dub has with Ring is heartwarming and throughout the book, Ring advises Dub and protects him.
